Steel Materials Quality Standards Built for North Texas
At 2J Steel in Decatur, Texas, quality starts before the first weld is made. Our steel materials quality standards are built into every spec, every beam, and every yard of concrete we pour. From I-beam trusses to 3500 PSI foundations, every building material we use is selected for structural performance and long-term durability across North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
Barndominiums & Weld-Up Barns
Steel Quality Specifications for Structural Framing
Every barndominium and weld-up barn we build starts with the right structural steel grades. All trusses are I-beam, ranging from 6" to 24" depending on load and width requirements. Columns are 4x4 11-gauge for 24'x24' structures. Anything larger uses I-beam columns from 6" to 18" based on load. Wall girts and rafters are 4" to 8" C-purlin, spaced 42" to 85.5" with 45" increments after that. Rafter spacing runs 43" to 52" depending on width. Columns are welded to weld plates embedded directly in the concrete, creating a secure column-to-foundation connection. All overhead doors are commercial insulated panel doors as standard. Between columns, we frame with 2x4 to 2x6 stud walls wrapped with Zip System or 1/2" plywood for moisture protection and structural backing.

Commercial Barns
Engineered Building Materials for Commercial Structures
Our commercial barns are all bolt-up engineered buildings. This approach uses factory-engineered components that meet consistent structural benchmarks, giving commercial clients the industrial reliability they need. Bolt-up construction also reduces on-site variables, ensuring that every building material arrives precisely fabricated and ready for a clean, efficient install.
Concrete & Site Preparation
Foundation and Dirt Work Material Standards
A strong structure begins with what's underneath it. Our concrete mix is 3500 PSI, poured over a vapor barrier with rebar chairs to keep steel properly lifted. Perimeter and cross beams are 12" wide by 18" deep. We use #4 rebar in the beams and #3 rebar on 18" centers across the top. Standard slab depth is 5.5", with 4" added on smaller jobs. Concrete pumps and piers are available when site conditions call for them. For dirt pads, we use select fill compacted every 2" to 4" until the desired height is reached. Roads are built with clean road base laid 4" to 6" thick and roller packed after spreading. This level of material sourcing and site prep ensures every foundation we place is ready to hold for decades in North Texas soil conditions.

Spray Foam Insulation
Thermal Performance Built Into Every Build
Insulation is one of the most critical building materials in any steel structure. For shops, we apply 1" to 2" of closed-cell spray foam, creating an airtight seal that resists moisture and thermal transfer. For barndominiums, we layer 1" to 2" of closed-cell plus 3" to 8" of open-cell foam, combining the rigid air barrier of closed-cell with the deep thermal cushion of open-cell. This two-layer approach addresses the thermal conductivity of steel framing and keeps interior temperatures consistent year-round, whether you're in a North Texas summer or a cold Southern Oklahoma winter.
